Hey there! I’m in the business of supplying rivets, and let me tell you, rivet guns are pretty cool tools. I get a lot of questions from folks about how these things work, so I thought I’d whip up a blog post to break it down. Rivet

What’s a Rivet and Why Do We Use It?
First off, let’s talk about rivets. A rivet is a small metal pin or bolt used to join two or more pieces of material together. They’re super handy in all sorts of industries, from construction to automotive and even aerospace. Unlike screws or bolts, rivets create a permanent joint, which means the connection doesn’t come loose over time. This is why they’re so popular in applications where reliability is key.
Types of Rivet Guns
There are a few different types of rivet guns out there, and each one has its own way of doing things.
Hand – Operated Rivet Guns
These are the most basic type. You’ve probably seen them at your local hardware store. They’re manual, which means you use your own muscle power to operate them. They’re great for small – scale projects or when you’re working in a tight space where you don’t have access to power tools.
The way a hand – operated rivet gun works is by using a lever mechanism. You put the rivet in the gun, insert it through the holes in the materials you want to join, and then squeeze the handles of the gun together. As you do this, the gun pulls on the mandrel (the thin part of the rivet), which causes the rivet to expand and form a tight joint.
Pneumatic Rivet Guns
These bad boys use compressed air to do the heavy lifting. They’re much more powerful than hand – operated guns and can be used for larger projects or when you need to install a lot of rivets quickly.
Pneumatic rivet guns work by having an air cylinder inside. When you press the trigger, compressed air rushes into the cylinder, pushing a piston forward. This piston then grabs the mandrel of the rivet and pulls it, just like in a hand – operated gun, but with a lot more force.
Electric Rivet Guns
Electric rivet guns are another option. They’re powered by electricity, either from a cord or a rechargeable battery. They’re a good middle – ground between hand – operated and pneumatic guns. They’re not as powerful as pneumatic guns, but they’re definitely more powerful than hand – operated ones and don’t require a compressor.
In an electric rivet gun, an electric motor drives a gear mechanism. When you activate the gun, the motor turns the gears, which in turn pull the mandrel of the rivet to create the joint.
Inside the Rivet Gun
Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on inside a rivet gun.
The Nose Piece
This is the part of the gun where the rivet goes. It’s designed to hold the rivet securely in place and guide it through the holes in the materials. Different nose pieces are available for different sizes and types of rivets. So, if you’re working with different rivet sizes, you might need to swap out the nose piece.
The Grip and Trigger
The grip is where you hold the gun, and it’s designed to be comfortable for long – term use. The trigger is what you press to activate the gun. When you pull the trigger, it sets off a series of actions inside the gun that ultimately result in the rivet being installed.
The Mandrel Retrieval System
Once the rivet is installed, the mandrel (the part that was pulled to expand the rivet) needs to be removed. Most rivet guns have a mandrel retrieval system. This can be a simple catcher where the mandrel falls into when it’s pulled off, or it can be a more complex system that actually ejects the mandrel out of the gun.
The Riveting Process Step – by – Step
Let’s go through the process of using a rivet gun to install a rivet.
Step 1: Prepare the Materials
First, you need to make sure the materials you want to join are clean and have the correct holes drilled in them. The holes should be slightly larger than the diameter of the rivet to allow for easy insertion.
Step 2: Select the Right Rivet and Nose Piece
As I mentioned earlier, different rivets and nose pieces are used for different jobs. Make sure you’ve got the right ones for your project.
Step 3: Insert the Rivet into the Gun
Take the rivet and insert it into the nose piece of the gun until it’s firmly in place.
Step 4: Insert the Rivet into the Holes
Put the end of the rivet through the holes in the materials you want to join. Make sure it goes all the way through.
Step 5: Squeeze the Trigger or Handle
If you’re using a hand – operated gun, squeeze the handles together. If it’s a pneumatic or electric gun, press the trigger. As you do this, the gun will start pulling on the mandrel.
Step 6: The Rivet Forms a Joint
As the mandrel is pulled, the rivet expands and fills the holes in the materials. This creates a tight, permanent joint.
Step 7: Remove the Mandrel
Once the joint is formed, the mandrel will break off. It will either fall into the mandrel catcher or be ejected from the gun.
Maintenance of Rivet Guns
To keep your rivet gun working well, you need to take care of it.
Regular Cleaning
After each use, clean the gun to remove any debris or dirt. You can use a brush and some compressed air to clean the internal parts.
Lubrication
Pneumatic and some electric rivet guns need to be lubricated regularly. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the right type of lubricant and how often to apply it.
Inspection
Periodically, inspect the gun for any signs of wear and tear, such as loose parts or damage to the nose piece. If you find any issues, repair or replace the parts as needed.
